Can I publish material for Mutants & Masterminds 4E?

Since its debut in 2002, Green Ronin has allowed third party publishers to sell compatible material at no cost to them through programs like Super-Powered by M&M. The first three editions were released under the Open Game License, but 4th Edition will not be. If you want to understand why, search on the phrase “OGL debacle” and you’ll see. We are creating a new licensing framework for 4th Edition. If you are a current third-party publisher, see below for what that means for you.

You will have two options if you want to publish 4E material:

The M&M 4E Compatibility License is a free license similar to what we’ve done before. It will let you publish 4E compatible material (supplements only, not standalone games). You can create new settings and characters, rules expansions, adventures, and the like. As with Super-Powered by M&M, you cannot use the Earth-Prime setting or other Green Ronin intellectual property.

M&M Multiverse is a community content program hosted by our friends at Roll20/DriveThruRPG. Starting with D&D’s Dungeon Master’s Guild, these have become a popular option in the last decade. We already have two such programs: the AGE Creators Alliance (for our games that run off the Adventure Game Engine) and the Chronicle System Guild (for our Sword Chronicle game built on the rules from A Song of Ice and Fire Roleplaying). We’ll be folding all our programs into a single one for Green Ronin, and M&M Multiverse will be part of that.

The exciting thing about M&M Multiverse is that you can publish material for our Earth-Prime setting for the first time. Want to introduce your own villains and organizations to Freedom City or Emerald City? You can! Want to write a solo adventure featuring Johnny Rocket? You can! We will provide layout templates and a library of art you can use. Since this provides much more than the M&M 4E Compatibility License, there will of course be a cost. As with other community content programs, a percentage of each sale goes to Green Ronin and to DriveThruRPG.

This is our basic plan for M&M 4E licensing. We will announce full details later in the year.

If you are a third-party publisher who has released material for our previous editions, thank you! We will be sunsetting the Super-Powered by M&M program, since it’s very much associated with 3rd Edition. You needn’t worry about your back catalogs, however. You can go on selling all the material you have released, and you don’t need to remove the Super-Powered by M&M logo or anything like that. That program will end though and after that you won’t be able to use the logo on any new 3rd Edition products you release. You can still publish products for previous editions of M&M using the Open Game License if you like. Everyone except WotC agrees that the OGL is forever, so any open content we released is still available to you.

Will people who bought the Origin Edition playtest of 4th Edition get a discount on the final game?

A: Yes. If you bought a print version, you will get a $10 credit. If the PDF, you will get a $5 credit. We’ll be handling this in the pledge manager after the campaign.

What is the state of M&M 4E right now?

Mutants & Masterminds 4E is text complete. It’s been written, extensively playtested, and edited. Backers will receive text only PDFs of the chapters one by one over the ensuing months. Interior art will be commissioned after the campaign.

BackerKit FAQ

What is BackerKit?

BackerKit is a service that crowdfunded project creators use to keep track of hundreds to tens of thousands of backers—from shipping details, pledge levels, preferences and quantities, whether they have paid or had their card declined, special notes, and everything in between!

The BackerKit software and support team is independent from the campaign’s project team—BackerKit does not handle the actual reward shipping. For more information about the preparation or delivery status of your rewards, please check the project's updates page.

How does BackerKit work?

After the campaign ends, the project creator will send you an email with a unique link to your survey. You can check out a walkthrough of the process here.

I never received my invitation. How do I complete the survey?

The most common reasons for not receiving a survey email is that you may be checking an email inbox different from the email address you used to sign up with Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account, or it may be caught in your spam filter.

Confirm that the email address you are searching matches the email address tied to your Kickstarter, Indiegogo, or Tilt Pro account. If that doesn’t work, then try checking your spam, junk or promotions folders. You can also search for "backerkit” in your inbox.

To resend the survey to yourself, visit the project page and input the email address associated with your Kickstarter, Indiegogo or Tilt Pro account.

How do I update my shipping address?

BackerKit allows you to update your shipping address until the shipping addresses are locked by the project creator. To update your address, go back to your BackerKit survey by inputting your email here.

When will my order be shipped, charged or locked?

That is handled directly by the project creator. BackerKit functions independently of the project itself, so we do not have control of their physical shipping timeline. If you want to check on the project’s status, we recommend reading over the project's updates page.

I completed the survey, but haven't received my rewards yet. When will they arrive?

As BackerKit does not actually handle any rewards or shipping, the best way to stay updated on the shipping timeline would be to check out the project's updates page.
